2 Dead for the Price of 1
OMG!!!!! The best show on television is back and came back with a surprise that no one saw coming. This show has been the best show for a while but, there was so much talk in the nerd community of it becoming predictable or jumping the shark and this first episode eliminated all those concerns. We left off last year with the Survivors all being lined up in front of Negan who promised to use Lucille on one of them to send a message. For those of us who read the comics, in issue 100 this exact scene happened and Glenn was the unfortunate one chosen. After the stunt the writers pulled last year with Glenn this was such a divisive topic because half the viewers wanted him gone and the other half wanted him to stay. And the half that wanted him to stay was relieved to see Abe get his brains destroyed in one of the most graphic scenes to date on this show. Abe was a character that we liked, but was dispensable and it appeared that the show took the easiest possible way out of a horrible situation…. OR SO WE THOUGHT!!!!
The episode switched between post Lucille beating and during the beating so all we saw for a large part of the show was a broken down Rick being dragged around by Negan like a little boy. We have never seen Rick so cold and mentally destroyed and it was odd given that he was not super close with Abe. Then we had the shocker that no one saw coming. They flash back to post Abe destruction and Negan is going on about understanding who is boss and to make a point he pivots and absolutely demolished Glenn with a blow heard around the world. Glenn’s forehead was caved in, his eye was popping out his socket and he was still alive. Honestly this scene was hard to watch on so many levels, while being absolutely amazing at the same time. The writers found a way to give everyone what they wanted and what they hated in the same episode while displaying some of the best special effects that has ever appeared on this show.
What The Hell is Next
Going forward this season I expect this to be just the beginning of the destruction and entertainment that Negan will bring to the show. Jeffery Dean Morgan is the perfect actor for this role and with the show loosening up on its language and violence restrictions, its only gonna get worse. Negan in the comic books is the worst person in the world, while at the same time being incredibly charismatic and entertaining. To balance those character traits the show will have to present him as someone who is a capable leader while also being someone you don’t mess with.
At the end of the episode the Saviors kept Daryl and Maggie and Sasha seem hell bent on going back for revenge. Knowing Daryl he will somehow break away and get back to the group, but I do not expect Negan to be killed off this season for many reasons, but most importantly because what he did to Glenn and Abe will make our team want to kill him but remind them that if they fail the consequences are grave.
I expect sometime in the next two weeks we will check in on Morgan and his pursuit of Carol with the Kingdom. The Kingdom is a benevolent group that I imagine will help in the eventual revenge plot against Negan and the Saviors. Morgan’s character went through hell last season and a lot of viewers were ready for him to die, so it will be interesting to see if the show can revive support for Morgan and give us a reason to like him again.
