They Really Did It
I seem to say this every week but this week it will be hard to beat, but this show felt more like an actual comic book then I have seen on television before. The time travel rules, Barry phasing though a wall, Cisco’s googles and Caitlyn continuing to wear blue, plus the big reveal at the end (we will address that later). This episode successfully took a complex subject that I worried casual viewers might get confused and was able to translate it and masterfully at the same time throwing us comic book readers a nice delicious chunky bone.
The Reverse Flash is Back
I remember last year thinking it was so sad they killed off The Reverse Flash when Eddie shot himself, because this character is such a big part of The Flash’s story and that they had so many more stories to tell with him. Well, looks like he’s back for good now. Last weeks episode ended with Reverse Flash accidentally ending up in our time line and this time its the Original Eobard Thawne being played by Matt Letscher and not Harrison Wells. Well early in the episode we find out what Thawne has been doing and thats setting up a trap to lure The Flash out so he can verify if this is a timeline/time period with The Flash in it. His trap worked when Barry saved a runaway tanker from crashing into buildings. Thawne’s whole purpose in life is to make The Flash’s life a living hell so it makes sense that he would do something like this to get him out in the open. The Reverse Flash character in the Matt Letscher portrayal is much more like the comic book character, kind of an evil nutcase that is obsessed with The Flash. Reverse Flash goes to mercury labs to get tachyon particles so that he can get back to his time presumably to plan an attack on The Flash now that he knows what time The Flash is in. The team only finds out about the Reverse Flash because Harry and Cisco were trying to figure out how to control his vibe powers so Harry put on the old Reverse Flash suit to scare him, which worked but would lead to issues later on with Cisco.
Cisco, Harry and Vibe
Meanwhile I’m still campaigning for a Cisco and Harry spinoff show because the chemistry between Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanagh is amazing. They are still trying to figure out how to take Zoom’s speed when they come up with the idea of controlling Cisco’s powers to find him. After Harry upgraded Cisco’s goggles and figures out that fear is what triggers his vibe Cisco uses those vibe powers to find the Reverse Flash. The interesting thing about what he saw was that it was in the future. Thats right, Cisco can see into the future, which is an interesting character turn for him because he was always just a the cool nerd (no pun intended) but now because of how useful a power that can be he is not one of the most powerful people in that universe. Not physical power of course, but the knowledge that he can gain by looking into the future or the past and partnering that up with a speedster who can travel in the future and the past could really solve some crimes but also potentially have a serious impact on the timeline. I don’t think the writers would just through this in like comic book writers did Superman powers just to solve the villain of the week. I think this power will be a gift and a curse to the character and the next time we see it will probably have something to do with Caitlyn and Killer Frost.
Don’t Mess With the Timeline/h3>
After Cisco seeing in the future Barry was able to goto Mercury Labs and stop Thawne. They captured Thawne and put him in the cells in the accelerator. Harry warned them not to talk to Reverse Flash and definitely don’t tell him who you are but they didn’t listen. Cisco went down there and told him he has powers and thats how they caught him and then Barry went do and questioned him which messed up the timeline. Any time you mess with the timeline there is a consequences and this time by keeping the reverse flash Cisco was essentially fading away. You never know what the exact cause is but they figure it has something to do with him coming back in time so they had to send him back to his time. This show continues to beat you over the head with the idea that messing with time is very harmful and the more characters that test that theory it seems the worse the consequences are, and with Legends of Tomorrow happening at the same time I think we are going to see some interesting things to our DC TV Universe.
With all the cool comic book stuff and time travel things that happen this show never forgets to hit you with the drama. This week there were to separate dramatic filled storylines. First The West Family is coping with Francine being on the brink of death. Iris who had so much anger and resentment built up towards her mother broke down and let it all go which was so good to see. At the same time as being vulnerable she was strong and was the rock that Wally needed to let go of his anger. Wally just had a bombshell dropped on him at the same time that his mother was dying and understandably he was having a hard time dealing with it. Iris was able to show him that we all have losses and things sprung on us but what makes up great is how we react and move forward. This group of actors and actresses are great and these segments always leave your eyes a little watery.
The other emotional rollercoaster is the two scenes with Patty and Barry. Patti had figured out that Barry is the Flash yet Barry had to (in his mind) not tell Patty in order to keep her safe. The hurt in Patty’s face when Barry looked her right in the eye and lied when they both knew they were lying was so telling and you just felt for her. However she got the satisfaction she needed when she called Barry on the train and the Flash showed up. Barry realized she got him and stop vibrating his face to essentially tell Patty yes I’m the Flash but there are reasons why I can’t tell you. I assume Patty will be off the show for a little while but we will see her back and I think their relationship may be awkward at first but will work out in the end.(not romantically though because we all still want Barry with Iris right??)
It’s Time for…….Who Is Zoom?????/
And last but not certainly lease, the show always leaves you with a cliff hanger or moment that f*cks with your mind. Caitlyn and Jay goto the park because Jay wants to show Caitlyn why she can’t find a Jay Garrick doppelgänger. What he explains is that his Earth-1 counterpart was adopted by a family shortly after birth and his name is HUNTER FREAKING ZOLOMON!!! Thats right you guessed it Zoom from the comic books.
Now to be clear I don’t think he will be Zoom only because so many comic fans know he is Zoom from the comics and that would be to easy, and if there is anything we have learned from this show is they do not make it easy. But I do think eventually in this show he will become a speedster and cause havoc on The Flash. As far as who is Zoom I still believe its Henry Allen from Earth-2 but this will through a nice little wrinkle in that thought but hopefully they will expound upon this in the upcoming weeks.
