Game of Thrones Season 6 Preview
Its been 10 long months since we last saw Game of Thrones and finally season 6 is here. After all the anticipation, rumors, and spoilers we finally get to see what has happened to our favorite characters and if anyone is getting closer to winning the Game. We are going to do a recap/preview by city to get ready for the season premier on Sunday. This show has become such a cultural icon that Game of Thrones premiere should probably be a national holiday. With only two seasons after this one Season 6 should get us ready for the final stretch of the story and for the first time ever the TV Show is ahead of the books so TV viewers and book viewers are all in the same boat, on the edge of our seats waiting to see what is going to happen.
Kings Landing is the center of Westeros and all things lead to the Iron Throne. Season 5 still had people playing the Game of Thrones and lying, stealing, deceiving, and manipulating to position themselves to be in power. The season kicked off with a Cersei flashback where a witch predicts her future. She tell Cersei that she will be queen for “a while” but someone younger and more beautiful will come and that the king will have 20 children but she will have 3. This was the first flashback on the show and it was telling and set the tone for where all of Cersei’s chess moves are coming from.
We also see Tommem and Margaery tying the knot and Margaery did not wait long to start manipulating Tommen to get Cersei out of Kings Landing. Tommen was sprung off of Margaery’s “loving” and she immediately went to convincing him that Cersei would be happier back in Casterly Rock. Most of the audience is rooting for Margaery if for no other reason than they hate Cersei, but in the back of their mind knew Cersei would have a plan for this. Cersei knew that Loras was gay and that if she riled up the religious zealots she could cause a rift in the family. She then gave the High Sparrow an army (Faith Militant) back up the High Sparrow’s punishment with physicality.
Cersei got more than she could have bargained for because not only was Loras jailed for sleeping with men, but Margaery was jailed as well for lying under oath about her knowledge. The Queen of Thorns tried to do get them out of this situation but she had no impact on the High Sparrow. But, Littlefinger let her know that their is an ace in the whole and that was Lancel Lannister. Lancel had become part of the Faith Militant and confessed his sins of having sex with family i.e Cersei to the High Sparrow. Cersei who could not help but to taunt Margaery went to the High Sparrow and he called her out on this and locked her up as well.
Cersei did not handle this well and she ended up confessing her crimes. But, the High Sparrow told her that she would be on trial for the accusations of have bastard children and incest with Jamie. As a result of her confession, the High Sparrow gave he the “Mothers Mercy” and he atonement was to essentially take a walk of shame, naked through Kings Landing back to her castle. Once she got to the castle she was greeted by Qyburn who somehow brought the Mountain back to life and vowed to kill all of Cersei’s enemies.
What to Expect this Season
We left off with the Margaery and Loras still in jail and we should see some type of conclusion to their crimes I would expect a confession and or Loras taking the sword to allow Margaery to be queen for the greater good. Cersei is at her most embarrassed after loosing her hair and having to walk through the common folk naked and will be in full revenge mode. She will also have to deal with what happened in Dorne (see Dorne section) and how that may change the family dynamic and relationship between her and Jamie.
Arya finally arrived in Braavos and was in search of Jaqen H’ghar and the House of Black in White. After being shunned from the house initially and roaming the streets for a while Jaqen finally allowed her into the house and to become and apprentice of some sort. Of course, Arya was determined to become a Faceless man and became impatient but Jaqen showed her that she was not ready. Jaqen told Arya that in order to become a Faceless man she must become no one and in order to become no one she has to get rid of Arya Stark. Arya changed her her threw all her clothes in the ocean but, did not throw needle away. After observing Jaqen Arya was able to convince a sick girl to drink from the fountain and Jaqen then told her she was not ready to be no one but she was ready to become someone else.
Arya then takes on the identiy of Lanna a clams saleswoman and was instructed to kill the “Thin Man” for not paying his debts. However when Arya was about to kill him she saw Meryn Trant who is on her kill list getting out of a boat accompanying Lord Tyrell to the Iron Bank. Meryn Trant who was already a horrible person became more horrible by looking for little girls in the brothel and then beating them with a stick. Arya decided to take a face sneak in the brothel and brutally murder Meryn Trant. However Arya did not full fill her mission and ass a result she was punished with blindness.
What To Expect this Season
Arya is now blind and we don’t know if its temporary or if its permanent. Eventually she will get a second chance I assume to redeem herself. I think Arya Stark means to much for her but she will find someone way to become a faceless man without loosing all of Arya. She hid needle in the rocks for a reason and I think we will be seeing badass Arya with needle again.
The Wall: Castle Black
Stannis was at the Wall preparing to march on Winterfell and take it back from the Boltons. While he was their he saw the honor and skill of Jon Snow and offered him a chance to leave the Nights Watch and avenge his families deaths and become a Stark. Jon declared that he gave an oath to the Nights Watch and that was his place. Soon after that he was name Lord Commander of the Nights Watch and immediately became a divisive figure at the Wall. In an effort to get Jon Snow to change is mind Melisandre saw something in Jon Snow and made a final plea for him to come join Stannis but he declined.
Jon Snow decided that the Nights Watch were not enough to defeat the Whitewalkers and the Army of the Dead and that they would need the Wildlings help. The Wildlings and The Nights Watch have been feuding for centuries and this decision was blasphemy to a large portion of the group. Even so, Jon and a small group of crows decided to goto Hardhome and bring convince the Wildlings to come through the wall to farm some land just south of the wall, and when the time comes to help the crows fight the Army of the Dead. At this point we got the best scene of the season and an the Army of the Dead showed up and slaughtered and converted thousands. However, during the fight we found out that Dragon Glass was not the only thing that can kill a Whitewalker. Jon Snow’s Valyrian Steel sword was able to shatter the Whitewalker and the remaining Wildlings and Crows made it back to Castle Black.
Once they returned Sam asked Jon if he could be sent to the Cititdel to become a Maester to better serve the watch and to ensure the safety of Gilly and baby Sam. Jon Snow obliged and Sam left The Wall. Soon after Ollie came in and told Jon that one of the Wildlings had information on his uncle and that he was willing to talk, Alliser Thorne also directed him to the area of the Wildling, but it was a trap. There was a sign on the wall that said “traitor” for trying to make peace with the Wildlings and bringing them through The wall. The crows proceeded to stab Snow saying “for the watch” each time until Ollie gave the last fatal stab and Jon Snow bleed to his death.
What To Expect this Season
All of the rumors and talk this offseason has been around the questions “Is Jon Snow Dead”. We should get a clear answer to that before the end of Season 6. There is also the question of what is going to happen to the Wildlings now that Jon Snow is not their anymore and who will become the Lord Commander. Most would assume it is Sir Alliser Thorne, and if so when will he realize he made a great mistake. Most of the crows have not seen the Army of the Dead and have no idea what they are up against. I expect the Army of the Dead to make it to the Wall this season and that will be another great scene like the battle at hardhome last year. Lastly Melisandre is hanging around Castle Black and she showed great interest in Jon Snow, maybe just maybe she will have a say in the fate of Jon Snow this season.
Stannis is looking to march on Winterfell but bad thing after bad thing continues to happened to his army. First the mercenaries leave, second his army gets sick and people and horses die. Despite these things he still believes in the Lord of Light’s prophecy and trust in Melisandre. Stannis gets to a point where he is desperate and he decided to sacrifice his only daughter to the Lord of Light. Melisandre initially thought the sacrafice worked but after seeing his wife hang herself and more deaths in the group Melesandre left to go back to The Wall. Stannis, knowing that his chance of winning was slim to none still decided to march on Winterfell and got slaughtered. Stannis himself managed to survive, but was then killed by Brienne in revenge for killing Renly in an earlier season.
Back in Winterfell, Littlefinger setup an agreement with Roose Bolton that Sansa would marry his former bastard son Ramsay to solidify the North. The plan was for Sansa to get in good with the Boltons and then when Stannis took Winterfell she would be names Wardeness of the North. Unfortunately Littlefinger and Sansa did not know how evil Ramsay was. She soon found out in the emphasis scene of her being raped on her wedding night Reek being forced to watch. This scene and moment was the begning of a somewhat hero arc for Reek to become Theon again and help Sansa. Eventually Theon told Sansa that he did not kill her brothers and even killed Miranda who was jealous that she was not Ramsay’s wife. Before Ramsay got back and would realize what happened Theon and Sansa jumped off the castle into the snow to escape the Boltons.
What To Expect this Season
Now that Sansa and Theon escaped and The Boltons defeated Stannis, Littlefinger’s plan will not work out. However, if their is anything we know about Littlefinger it’s that he always has a backup plan. I would expect The Knights of the Vale to make an appearance to help Littlefinger become Warden of the North. Theon and Sansa will be trying to go somewhere and hopefully will run into Brienne and Podrick who will help them get safe. Bran will be back this season and we know he is somewhere in the North and has powers now and will probably play a role either at The Wall or with Sansa. Last but not least I think everyone watching wants to see Ramsay die a terrible and brutal death.
Daenerys is starting to loose control. She lost control of her dragons and had to lock two of them up and now the Sons of the Harpy have plotted to get their city back. She was also struggling with advisement because their were too many voices and she was not making correct decision. Eventually Daario convinced her to re-open the fighting pits to allow the city to continue its tradition. Soon after that The Unsullied were setup by the Sons of the Harpy and many were killed. They were saved by Barristan Selmy who was a badass warrior but lost his life in that fight were Greyworm was also severely damaged.
While all that was going on Varys and Tyrion were making their way to Meereen to hopefully advise and support Daenerys claim to the Iron Throne. While on the trip they stopped in Volantis becasue Tyrion needed to get some air and they saw another Red Woman who worshiped the Lord of Light and then Tyrion was kidnapped by Jorah. Jorah’s plan was to present this Lannister to Dany and she would forgive him and let him back in the circle. Unfortunately on the way to Meereen they went through Valyria and encountered stone men who infected Jorah with Grey Scale. They then were captured by slave owners and sold to fight in the fighting pits. Jorah defeated everyone Batman style without killing and revealed himself to Daenerys who had him arrested. At that point Tyrion announced himself as a “gift” and got a meeting to convince Dany that he is worth being around.
Tyrion convinced Dany that he would be a great advisor and they all attended the great games to see the fights. Jorah who was banished again by Daenerys came back to fight in the games and actually saved Dany by throwing a spear at a Son of the Harpy who was trying to sneak up and kill Dany. All hell broke loose and Daenerys, her council and a few Unsullied were surrounded by the Sons of the Harpy. Next thing you know Drogon showed up started burning and eating the Sons of the Harpy and flew off with Daenerys saving them from sure death.
Drogon and Daenerys landed in this random field and eventually Dany roomed off and was then surrounded by a heard of Dothraki. Back in Meereen Jorah and Darrio set out on a mission to find Dany and Greyworm, Tyrion and Missandei were left in charge to rule Meereen in Daenerys absence.
What To Expect this Season
Greyworm and Missandei are known figures in Meereen and have the trust and support of the common folks. They will be the figure heads in charge but Tyrion will be guiding them on how to rule and help to build a relationship with the rich. Varys will continue running his spy network to get the crew the information they need to keep the city running until Dany gets back. Jorah and Darrio are both in love with Dany and I would expect a conflict to occur regarding that on the trip to save her and we also have to see how much Jorah’s grey scale has spread and how that affects him. They show has told us that the grey scale can make you go crazy and he may end up hurting Dany or getting killed trying. Drogon is with Dany somewhere and will be back and the other two dragons have been locked up for so long and will either break free or be set loose.
Cersei sent Jamie on a trip to Dorne to bring back Myrcella becasue she was sent a threatening message from Ellaria and the Sand Snakes. Jamie then asked Bronn to accompany him on this trip. King Doran kept telling Ellaria that Dorne would not be going to war over Oberyn’s death to the mountain. She was not having that answer and would take matters in her own hands. When Jamie and Bronn arrived they found Myrcella and tried to get her to come back but was confronted by the Sand Snakes. They fought to a stand still with the exception of Bronn getting cut and then they all were arrested by the Kings Guard.
Bronn started flirting withe Tyene and she told him that all their blades were laced with a deadly poison called the Long Farewell and that they had the only antidote. She made him tell her she was the most beautiful woman in the world and then she gave him the antidote. After all this King Doran and Jamie came to an agreement that Myrcella would go back to Kings Landing but Prince Trystane would come back with her and would be a memeber of Tommen’s small council. They agreed and before they left Ellario apologized to Mycella with a long kiss. On the way back Myrcella told Jamie that she knew that he was her father and that she did not care but then her nose started to bleed and we see that Ellario poisoned her with that kiss.
What To Expect this Season
I would expect King Doran to find out about what happened and not be to happy with Ellaria. Also when Cersei finds out she may have Trystane killed which would cause Dorne and Kings Landing to goto war. It was not made clear if Mrycella is dead or not but if she is not it will be interesting to see Cersei’s reaction when she finds out that she knows Jamie is her father. And if Myrcella is alive does she tell Tommen that and how will that affect him ruling has king. I doubt this is the last time we see the Sand Snakes and I think something will happen with Bronn and Tyene who had great chemistry together on the show.
